Sometimes these moments last an afternoon, and sometimes we catch just a glimpse - where the lightness of a heart is perfectly reflected in the sun on a cheek, or the curl of a lip says more than the biggest laugh.

These are the moments we remember...

Every once and a while we are lucky enough to catch one of these moments on camera- giving us the moment to hold in our hands, to return to, to take with us. And some times, when a moment speaks the truths of all the moments before it- we have it painted.

It is the season of the Salmon, and there are few more beautiful than the Coho, in it's glorious coat of spawning colour.

In the spirit of "World Rivers Day" this coming Sunday, I thought I would post some paintings of our little friends (and fish snacks) the beloved Mayfly.

Indicative of a healthy eco-system, these winged beauties are unique amongst their insect counterparts for several reasons. One of those is, they are the only insect that molts after they get functional wings.

Before the molt, the wings are almost furry- resembling that of a moth, and in their short and final stage are more transparent and veined.

Come by the Haig-Brown House this Sunday (between 12 & 4) to celebrate our beautiful rivers, and see these Mayflies in person!

This is my 3rd official season working as an artist in the Comox Valley, and I must say, it is an enchanted life!

Enchanted, and filled to the brim!

Market season goes from May- December for me, and last year having done somewhere in the neighborhood of 23 shows, I felt a bit like a roady by the end of it. So this year was all about streamlining my set up.

The goal?

Light weight, compact, aesthetically pleasing, durable, and unfazed by wind.

A tall order.

As it happened there are some like minded folks out there doing some really cool things- and the rest? Well, I made it myself (with a little help from my favorite furry friend)!

It has only been since getting my own dog Tsavo, that I have come to understand the profound love and kinship that exists between a person and their dog. It is a bond I never anticipated would effect me in such a deep and altering way.

In the short year we have been together, Tsavo has taught me more about myself than I ever expected. When she came into my life, she brought with her endless compassion, an unfaltering commitment to the moment, and boundless enthusiasm.

There is no other relationship like it.

Knowing now, of the love shared between a dog and their human companions, I am even more humbled by the privilege of being a part of immortalizing such a kind and loyal friend, in this very special custom commission.

Well, I know this has been a long time coming... and I could come up with countless explanations, but I wont bore you with that! The good news is I have been hard at work in the studio, and I have some pieces to share with you!

I am going to head into this with a piece that some of you have seen, that is very special to me called 'The Arrival'

It features a barn owl- a mysterious and powerful being, a messenger and protector on lifes long journey and beyond.

Hello Spring!!!

I am finally ready to emerge from my (productive) hibernation, and let you all in on what I have been working away on in the studio over the winter.

Come and see me in the Artists Glade at The Kitty Coleman Woodland Gardens this weekend for the Art & Bloom Festival!

This gorgeous garden is an inspiring locale, with a multitude of treasures to behold, including rhodo's, ponds, fountains, and a labyrinth - not to mention some of the islands talent. There will be music, garden art, pottery, paintings and much, much more!

Well the month is almost over, and you know what that means?? Nautical Days is here!!

Saturday July 31st, Sunday August 1st, and Monday August 2nd

10am - 6pm 10am - 5pm 10am - 5pm

This is a big favorite in the Comox Valley - located at the Marina Park in Comox. It is scheduled to be Fun, Fun, Fun with a tone of things to do for all ages, and.... admission is FREE!!!

There will be a little something for everyone, including: a pancake breakfast all three mornings, Bullhead Fishing Derby, Pet Parade and Kids Function Junction. Sunday features an Interdenominational Church Service, Sailing Regatta, and Dragon Boat Races featuring 20+ boats from across BC. Monday is a big day with the Nautical Day Parade ending at Marina Park, the wacky Build, Bail and Sail race, vintage Car Displays, Bathtub races, and of course the Art and Crafts Market!!!

The Market will be located on the grass at the north-west corner of Comox Marina Park located at the foot of Port Augusta Street which is the main east-west street in the centre of the Town of Comox.

I will be there with some new Originals, prints, and framed pieces, as well as prints on canvas, tiny magnetic art, and greeting cards too. There is an ATM on site, and we also accept Visa and MasterCard.

Can't wait to see you all there for some fun in the sun!

Heading out to The Kitty Coleman Woodland Gardens this afternoon, to get set up for this weekends Art & Bloom Festival!

This is one of the most enchanting places in the Comox Valley for sure, and it is one of my very favorite events of the year.

The Rhodo's are in bloom and the winding paths and ponds are a very inspiring place to meet the Valleys Talent.

Enjoying the Moment

OK- so I am a very neglectful blogger... but when I think about it, I am convinced this a good thing! It just means I am too busy enjoying the moment to reflect on it - in the moment...

The reality is, if I could spend 12 hours a day in the studio painting, it probably still wouldn't feel like enough. And so I have been making the best of the hours I do get, to zone in behind the brush, before market season hits- TOMORROW!!! (I will be at the lovely local Pier Street Market from 9-2)

While the subtle light of winter danced through my big fir trees and kissed the faces of the canvases tucked tightly on the easel, I am grateful for all the hours spent lost in the colours, textures, and subtle nuances of each piece...

The winter has a lot to show for it's self as we move into spring, with 3 custom commissions all hung on the walls of their new loving homes, and 7 more nearly ready to leave the loft...

Here is a piece that will soon be available in print...... The original will be making it's debut tomorrow at the market, so come by and see it!

It's title leaves a little to be desired, it is currently masquerading as 'Mayfly#2'. If there are any anglers out there (or creative bug lovers) with a catchy suggestion for a name, I would love to hear it!!

Yesterday, two of my pieces were chosen for TWO separate treasuries! Holy moly!

Thank you to Francoise Lama-Solet, for giving my eco-friendly Spring Blossom print it's treasury debut, in her most romantic collection Screaming for Spring, it is a continuum of feminine beauty, it's as though these items were all made for each other!

And another big thanks to Gemalicious Beads for including my Eco-friendly Cutthroat Trout print in the treasury DREAM FISHING insomniac's wish. This fanciful fishy collection is one after my own heart! I love it, and hope you do to!

Well this is WELL over due, so I guess I should start by wishing you all much merriment and creativity in 2010! (It's already flying by so fast, I better get my wishes in while I can)!

Things around here have been off the hook with festivities of food, friends and family sandwiched between markets, shows, online bustle, custom commissions, developing exciting new things for this years market season, refining and arranging my humble studio.... oh yeah, and painting!

There is a whole new series of paintings coming this spring, and I can't wait to share them with you, but I don't want to spoil the surprise, so I am going to share some pictures of my studio in progress!

It is such a lovely space with all the natural light filtered kindly by the big old douglas firs just outside the window, and a place to put everything, and to let my imagination roll! It is a dream come true!

The holiday season will be officially upon us, as soon as the last tricker-treater goes home, and as achy as that makes my heart for summers sweet return, there is much to look forward to in the coming months.

With two back to back shows coming up, The Nanaimo Professional Craft Fair from November 6-8th and Courtenay's Charles Dickens Christmas Faire November 13-15th, getting the new studio dialed in, and prepairing for the influx of holiday shoppers, not to mention the commissions on the go, the days are full around here! And inspired!

I have always felt motivated by the fall, and inspired to sink my teeth into all the things I have been dreaming up all summer long. You can all look forward to some new pieces coming soon, as the weather changes, and I am lured by the warm embrace of my new studio!

The Trustees of TiC would like to invite you to When I Grow Up, a free event being organised by Trust in Children (TiC).

TiC is a small charity supporting children in education and non-academic development, including arts and sports, all over the world. This October we are holding an exhibition of art by children who have benefited from TiC support. It will be a unique event featuring paintings and drawings by children from Africa, South America and Eastern Europe, all themed around their ambitions for the future. It promises to be a really fun evening (with no pressure to donate!) and we would be so pleased if you are able to make it.

Some of the children's artwork will be auctioned by Lars Tharp, one of the longest running experts on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow, so be prepared to bid!

Amu Designs has also donated a print that will be up for auction, in support of this great cause!

When I Grow Up will take place at the Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood, next to Bethnal Green tube station (zone 2), from 18:45-21:15 on Wednesday 21 October 2009. Drinks and nibbles will be provided and as part of the event you will be able to enjoy an out-of-hours visit to the museum’s collection (including some incredible toys).

Robin Carneen, a member of the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, in La Conner, WA. is the host and producer of the NAMAPAHH First People's Radio, broadcasting from the Swinomish Reservation.

Robin came to Vancouver at the end of May to see one of my Portobello West shows, and to do an interview with me about my work, history, and influences. It was a very cool experience, and very different than anything I have done. It was an honour to be inaugurated into the world of radio by such a talented speaker.

All of the hours that went into the cake, were worth the final result...

The Bride and Groom loved it! Set in the woods, the tiny edible mushrooms, ferns, berries and bugs, fit right in. The day was enchanting, and held a subtle glow of magic.

There is something very special about art you can eat, and I look forward to exploring this new medium for other events.

I carefully hand sculpted each decoration out of fondant, an edible dough made from marshmallow and icing sugar. I let them dry for several days, allowing them to harden a bit before adding the colour.

Using a brush, I then glazed each piece with food dye (of the gel variety). Because these tiny sculptures had to travel, I made special boxes for them from biodegradable foamboard, and packed them very carefully.

After the cake was baked, and iced, I rolled out 1/2 inch slabs of fondant (which I had already coloured a soft green), and laid it over each tear of the cake. I do recommend trying this before hand, as it did take a few tries to get it right.

Then came the fun part... placing the decorations, and adding the final touches.

Summer!

With Markets, traveling, house guests, commissions, orders and wedding projects (my cousins), finding time to blog has been increasingly difficult.... I love summer, but it always seems tricky to fit in all the fun that whorls about me in fits and frenzies.

I have been charged with the task of making the wedding cake for my cousins woodland wedding. It is a something I am new to, and exploring edible mediums has proved to be quite a delight! I am having so much fun making forest floor treasures, I want to do little else!

The Bride has not seen the final creations, so I am going to keep them under wraps for now, but here are a few shots of my first try at fondant... a sticky, gooey, sugary dough, used to cover and decorate cakes.

Ok, so this is well over do, but I have just come down from atop the mountain of excitement about my new favorite event, The Art & Bloom Festival! It was magical!

The Kitty Coleman gardens are truly exquisite, and are well worth a visit any time of the year, but Art & Bloom was off the charts! This place is traced with roving paths to secret ponds, 3000 rhodos and is pretty much a direct translation of my own imaginary, secret garden paradise. Combine that with a plethora of kind, talented and lovely people (and a little sunshine), and you've got a recipe for delight and intrigue. I LOVE it there!

The weekend left me with a long wish list, and inspiration that will, no doubt, take me well in to the doldrums of winter.

If I have ever wanted anything more, I don't remember it now- after seeing the awe inspiring work of Cory Lunn & Darrel Nygaard of Sea-Change Open Studio. Their work in stone, clay and wood is out of this world, and needs to be experienced in person to be fully appreciated. If you get a chance to stop by their studio in Union Bay, look for a hanging piece with a fish skeleton etched in stone-it's head skillfully carved from an antler, powerfully and whimsicly suspended from a marvelous piece of drift wood... it moved me beyond words.

Although we made it through the entire weekend without as much as a drop of rain, I didn't manage a single picture with the sparkling sun really shining, but it did shine, I promise.

Put on your walking shoes and come and join me in enjoying a walk through the garden, and into the woods!

This weekend (May 16, 17 & 18th) at the internationally acclaimed Kitty Coleman Woodland Gardens, is the 7th annual Art and Bloom Festival!

The Woodland Garden is the gem of the Comox Valley. Complete with paths, benches, garden sculptures, and water features.

This is the Islands destination for unique art forms and originals by local artists. You will find artists, potters, sculptors, glass blowers, original stained glass designers and garden art just to name a few!

It only happens twice a year, so come out and enjoy this beautiful combination of wilderness and subtle cultivation, and see a little art too!

I think the Rhododendrons will be in bloom!

Campbell River Rocks!

Yesterday I experienced my first Pier Street Farmers Market and Art Fair, as a vendor, and it was so much fun! What a great crowd!

The sun shone for us, and everyone was happy to be out and about enjoying it after such a long winter, many of them with their Moms in tow!

It was such a treat to meet so many people excited about art, the environment and the community, and to see so much willingness to support these important facets of our local culture. It reminded me of all the reasons why I am so excited about what I am doing, and all the reasons I am doing it. Meeting so many like minded people, made me very proud to call this beautiful city home.

There is a lot of talent, and friendly faces at this market, and some exquisite craftsmanship and creativity at work. Some of my favorites were definitely:

Here is the recap, incase you've been wondering...

Portobello West's april market was a hit. The masses were literally lined up to get in! The sun dappled through the walls of glass to kiss the beautiful creations of some of Vancouvers most talented designers, jewelry makers and artists. It was a hoot!

There were a bunch of new vendors out, and man was I impressed! If you want jewelry that will knock their socks off, this is where you'll find it. And if you have a little one, this is the place to find the coolest of cool outfits- checkout Superfly Lullabie s- for some swank blankies and I especially love that Owl hoodie... and then there is the art of course!

If you haven't made it down yet, don't fret you have another chance to get out there and see me, and meet the makers, on the last sunday of May...

What a week of wonder! Between all the markets, and the creative endeavors, I found a little time to check out a lake, hidden in the woods. It was a bit windy for fishing, but from the dock, I witnessed a plethora of life flourishing beneath the waters surface.

I saw a rough skinned newt battle a leach, a Predacious Diving Beetle (they are HUGE), a Red legged frog, a Sculpin, and a whole lot of beauty in general. It was such an interesting place, full of little creatures I'm not accustom to seeing. And there was a dock side cook-out to boot!

I love Spring.

Things got a little prettier around here this week. My new frames arrived, and I fell in love all over again.

Each an art piece in their own right, these frames are overwhelmingly beautiful. Hand crafted entirely from reclaimed barn wood, their perfectly weathered story is written all over them. Entrenched with intrigue and scared with the tooling marks of their previous incarnation they are rich with history, and yet the hands of time and nature have softened them perfectly around the edges.

Earthy and deep their subtle complexities finish the prints off just as I had envisioned.

I am very excited to announce that they are now available in my etsy shop! Or if you are in the Vancouver area, you can come and see them in person at the Portobello West Market this sunday (April 26th) at the rocky mountaineer station.

Mothers Day is coming, and what a great place to spend the afternoon with her, or pick her up a little something to remind her just how treasured she is.

Corn dip

Corn is a marvelous and versatile plant.

The bags I use for packaging your prints are made from it- they are shiny, clear and bio-degradable. Some pre-washed spinach is boxed in a corn based "plastic" box, the shopping bags at my local grocery store are made from it, and on top of it all- it's delicious!

I love corn on the cob. The common conundrum faced around here is how to adequately BUTTER the corn on the cob. I am sure this is something you all have faced as well. You can try to slather it on with a knife, but it usually melts before you can get to every side, or you can dedicate a slab of butter on a plate for rolling, but then you end up with a chunk of butter with bits of corn in it, or those silken threads laced all through...

Well here's a little bit of ingenuity for you, to solve the perpetual question on how best to butter it. (I didn't come up with this myself, but it sure did work like a charm).

You will need:
*1 deep wide mouth jar
*boiling water
*some butter

Fill the jar about 2/3 full of boiling water (leaving room for displacement), and drop a chunk of butter in it. Carefully transport the hot buttery liquid to the dinning area of your choice (for us this is most commonly the coffee table) and then, at your leisure, dip the cob in! The melted butter settles at the top, and the hot water keeps it liquid for ease of dipping. As you dip the cob in and pull it out all of the water runs off, leaving it delightfully coated in butter on every side! It doesn't look very pretty here, but trust me, this buttery goodness will not disappoint!

I knew it would be good, but you all have some brilliant ideas! Thank you so much for sharing your collective genius! I didn't expect choosing would be so hard... I sort of expected that one would really speak to me, and I am delighted (and challenged) to say that I loved them all!! But alas I really must choose...

There is so much beauty lingering in the minds of all you folk, and because I love all of these ideas so much (except for the ant one-I hate ants, they are eating my house, but I will grant you a few points for humour) I have decided to pick 2 winners! Although I am not going to make any promises for when I might get to the other paintings, I do promise to post the progress as it happens.

So- With no further ado!

Curb-side pick up

Well, it is officially the dawn of Garage Sale season!

A long winter hiding from the rain, snow and wind, can encourage behavior like hoarding. I live with such a hoarder...ahem- collector.

He really does have an eye for treasures, I wont argue with that, but in my mind, what makes these things valuable is our ability to admire and appreciate them. His collections have an entire room dedicated to them, but not in the way you might expect. It's not a retreat, or place of solitude, where one could retire at the end of a arduous day, to be amongst things which renew the spirit... No. It's a room where his assemblage of treasures simply accumulate in stacks, piles, and mounds, usually in the bag or box they came in. Never to be seen again. It's too bad really, because there is some really interesting stuff in there.

The spring time goal is to clear out some of the no longer need things in the rest of the house, so that maybe some of the hidden booty in the back room can get a little air time. We are going to have a garage sale.

And if on the off chance we can't find new loving homes for all four of the old (working) TV's in the garage (for example), I have found the perfect solution.

It's called Freecycle.

Freecycles' mission is to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landfills while enabling it's members to benefit from the strength of a larger community. It acts like a bulletin board of sorts where you can list items that are no longer useful to you, and someone who would like them can arrange to come and get them, or you can request an item that you could make use of. So Cool!

There is likely an active network in your community, so if your wondering what to do with those unwanted treasures, check it out!

A gift for your input

All this light and warm weather is inspiring me... this morning I did two loads of laundry (and put it a way- a victory in it's self), vacuumed the entire house (and the couch), and was showered and dressed before 8:00.

Considering my body prefers 7:30-8 am wake-up, this is most note worthy.

I am feeling motivated and inspired, and credit spring almost entirely. I have about 3 projects on the go in addition to the custom jobs I am working on, BUT, I still feel like painting something for myself (and you). The trouble is, I don't know quite where to place my inspiration, and find myself waffling around a subject. I just can't quite figure out what I would like to paint....

I know all you readers are full of great ideas, and would like to invite your suggestions here.

The person who's idea I choose will receive a gift... a little something new I've been working on and can't wait to release. I will post progress reports on the development of the piece too, so stay tuned...

Original Paintings

We finally got a real spring day! I got caught up imagining what it might be like to live in a place where 15 degrees is as cold as it ever gets... I cleaned up the yard, fired up the BBQ, and enjoyed the embrace of the long forgotten warm air.

There is nothing like a walk through the neighborhood on such an evening, and a peak in the windows of the people I live amongst... I love to see how people live. I don't care to see what they are up to, I just want to know what's hanging on there walls.

Those funny figurines on crowded book shelves, refridgerators papered with family photo's, childrens artwork, and tomorrows grocery list. You get the classic velvet painting of the matador, and collectable plates hung with care behind the dinning room table, you even see the odd Pirate flag/window covering... What I like the most about all of this is knowing that behind each one of those treasures is a story, they are the things that remind us of what's important, of who we are, where we've come from, and the things we dream about... Then sometimes, you get a glimpse of something that really intrigues you, a piece above a mantle that gets your wheels turning, gets you dreaming of that place in your own house that has a story to tell. That wall that's waiting for something to hold.

If you have a wall with a story to tell I might have just the punctuation you have been looking for....The creative spirit bound to paint, and laid carefully with intention, to speak a truth unique you...

Mission Portobello phase one completed

It's hard to believe it was a week ago already!

The Portobello West Market was great! I had a blast... I learned a lot, saw some old friends and even made some new ones. I liked it so much that I can't wait to do it again, and will be there again at the end of the month with a few new treasures to share.

I have just realized that I was so caught up in being there, that I didn't get any pictures to show you... I think there maybe a few floating around out there though, so I'll see if I can get my hands on them...

Hanami

Hanami is the centuries old custom of enjoying flowers, cherry blossoms in particular. In Japan, it is celebrated each spring with feasts and sake beneath the blossoming beauty of the Cherry Tree.

Historically the cherry tree was used to divine the harvest of the year ahead, and to announce the beginning of rice planting season. People believed in the existence of Gods dwelling within the trees, and offerings were made at their roots. Afterwards they themselves would partake, in the offering with sake.

The flowers themselves were seen as a metaphor for life itself, luminous and beautiful yet fleeting and ephemeral.

To move smoothly and unhesitatingly from one state, condition, situation, or element to another.

This is the name of one of my latest paintings. Those of you in the Southern Hemisphere will appreciate the vibrant colours, that you will soon be seeing in your own back yards. For us in more northern locales, it is a reminder of how far we've come, and all that we have to look forward to.

I am infinatley inspired by the richness of fall, saturated and spent, still warmed by the earth, preparing to settle in for some well earned rest and reflection.

This piece is a representation of the Black Cottonwood, a beautiful and diverse contributor to many eco systems.

Black Cottonwood
(Populus trichocarpa)

This tree was the first tree to have its entire DNA code sequenced, and it has shaken up what we understand about plant biology, and evolution.

In addition to answering specific questions about botany, this information has many industrial implications.

The tree has far less DNA in its cells than humans, but twice the number of genes. It was discovered that 93 of the genes are involved in making cellulose. Cellulose can be broken down into sugar, fermented into alcohol and distilled to produce bio-fuel. Making this information of particular interest.

The use of Bio-fuels has the potential to curb our reliance on oil imports, while reducing our eco-footprint.

Black Cottonwoods are hardy, fast growing, potentially large, straight trees which are easy to establish. This makes them useful in many ways beyond forestry and manufacturing.

They can be planted as windbreaks, shelterbelts, and screens along motorways, reducing noise, creating habitat, and increasing aesthetic value.

Cottonwoods are also effective soil stabilizers; their aggressive root systems make the species useful in the restoration of riparian areas. When used in this way, they provide protection for the aquatic environment, by providing shade and lowering water temperatures. The high nitrate uptake and extensive rooting of these trees also makes them useful for buffer or filter planting along streams in agricultural areas. This creates habitat for birds and small mammals, and reduces ungulate damage, increasing bank stability, and in turn improving aquatic habitat.

Hectic-Good Hectic

Things have been hectic around here- good hectic. Between all the holidaying, guests, celebrating and feasts of the past few weeks, I have also been busy readying for the Portobello West Market, coming up this weekend.

My faithful accomplice has been such a gem, trimming with precision, lifting heavy things, putting his shoulder into it, bringing coffee, reminding me to eat, but alas he must go back to work, and I have 3 days left to put the final touches on.

I know it looks like I am trying to coax a frightened animal out of it's hiding place, but I am actually using my light box to take some new pictures for my Etsy site.

I really can't wait. It is all very exciting. A collective of creatives, all under one roof- a dance of colour, a feast for the senses!

Point West Cottages

Ucluelet... if you like pretty places, hidden beaches, whale watching and rainforests, this is the place for you.

If you want to watch the sunrise in kingsize comfort, moon gaze from your private hot tub, and curl up in front of the fireplace, you must stay where we stayed. It was amazing! (there is also a pivoting flat screen TV with satellite for my fellow Hockey fans and your own personal BBQ too)

It was all windows and skylights. It felt like being in the great outdoors except it was warm, dry and immaculate.

The first light of day...

We loved it here so much that we decided to make a tradition of it.

My pictures don't do it justice (I some how managed to mess up my camera settings) but trust me, you wont be disappointed. The website has all the facts, but it is way nicer than even their pictures would have you believe. It's called Point West Water Front Cottages, the people were very down to earth, friendly folks who were nearly as excited to be there as I was
(they are from out East and were loving the lack of snow).

Happy Spring!!!

It's official, after today, our days start getting longer.

I am sure that I am not the only one welcoming this notion...

This year the farmers almanac predicts that:
*April and May will be cooler than normal, with below-normal precipitation in all areas but the northeast (BC).
*Summer will be cooler and rainier than normal, with the hottest temperatures in early July.
*September and October will be cooler than normal, with precipitation below normal near the coast and above normal inland (BC).

Love Stampede

This piece was in the works for nearly a year before it reached completion.

There is more to a painting for me than just laying paint on a canvas... it all starts with a little muse.

Inspiration presents itself in many different ways for me, but it's not uncommon for it to arrive in the shape of a lovely person or two, as it did on this very special occasion.

I have only been on a horse maybe twice (even though I come from a long line of cowboys), but there are two lovely folks I know who hold these four leggeds near and dear and have the stories and scars to prove it. Last summer they decided to celebrate there union with some fine feasting, music, family and friends, and I thought this piece would be a nice way to honor their love and celebrate along side them as their passions ran through their own Love Stampede.

Sorry about the lack of posts... My Man took me on a magical surprise vacation!

We went to Ucluelet, and toured the magical and awe inspiring surf and trees of long beach. It was perhaps the most enchanting holiday I have ever been on (due in no small part to the company). I suggest everyone go there. You really can't beat it.

I'll post more on the great place we stayed later, but for now just a few pictures to entice your imagination, and get you dreaming about your own Magical Mystery Tour!

Colour can save you money

Colour can save you money, and reduce your eco footprint. Think of the difference you experience wearing a black shirt in the sun, versus wearing a white shirt in the sun...

The same applys to houses. The lighter/more reflective your roof, the cooler the rooms beneath it remain. It works in cooler regions too, using darker colours to increase temperature.

The difference colour can make is startling. On a 32.2 C clear sunny, day in Austin Texas, a white roof had a temperature of 43.3 C,
an aluminum coated roof was 60 C,
while a black, single ply roof, had a temperature of almost 87.8 C

A study in Florida revealed that by increasing heat reflectivity, homeowners saved an average of 23% if their cooling costs. That could make a big difference in the long run.

The lighter the color the higher the reflectivity. Dark walls absorb more light and reflect less. Consequently, far more lighting is required for rooms with dark walls than those with light walls. In addition to the walls, it is a good idea to keep the ceiling light and bright for good reflectance.

Most major paint manufacturers can tell you the Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of any color paint chip. White reflects 80% of the light, black 5%. Therefore, the higher the LRV number of the paint color, the less artificial light you will need.

Caution: Don't go overboard. An extremely high lighting level combined with very light walls is bad if it creates glare and / or too much brightness on the wall. This causes excessive stimulation and irritation of the eyes. Eye fatigue will follow.

I thought this was particularly interesting considering I am cold all the time (my living room is green, blue and white): The color of a room will affect your perception of temperature. Tests document that people estimate the temperature of a room with cool colors, such as blues and greens, to be 6-10 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than the actual temperature. Warm colors, such as reds and oranges, will result in a 6-10 degrees Fahrenheit warmer estimate.

In these ways colour can play an important role in energy conservation.

Phosphates

Phosphates are found in nature, and are of high nutrive value to palnts and animals, so you may wonder why they can be dangerous to the health of our water ways.

Phosphates are present in many soaps, detergants, and commercial household products. They are also found in many fertilizers, and are used as animal feed supplements for their nutritive qualities. They are used in pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals as well.

High phosphate concentrations in surface waters is often an indicator of fertilizer runoff, domestic waste discharge, or the presence of industrial effluents or detergents. Although phosphates from these sources are usually organically bound, all will degrade to "ortho" or reactive phosphates with time. In water containing high concentrations of phosphates, algae and other aquatic plant life will flourish, eventually resulting in the accelerated decay of organic matter, causing decreased dissolved oxygen levels in the water, and thus suffocating fish, and other water bound life forms.

You can help reduce the amount of phosphates entering our water supply by reading lables on your household products, and choosing to use those that are phosphate free.

There are a few recipes for eco-friendly alternatives in previous posts, and here is another one for a water friendly oven cleaner...

simply use baking soda, salt and water mixed into a paste!

Green is the most predominant colour in the natural world, and occupies the most space in the spectrum visible to the human eye. For this reason, green is the color used for night-vision goggles, as the human eye is most sensitive to green, and is able to discern the most shades of this color.

This familiar colour is a natural balance of warm and cool undertones, creating a feeling of tranquility and freshness.

Although our responses to colour vary from culture to culture, green often denotes health, peace and ecology.

Because I think night vision googles are exceedingly cool, and because I love nothing more than a day in the woods tree gazing, green is (if I must choose) my favorite colour.

Yellowfin Tuna

The Western and Central Pacific ocean is the Worlds largest Tuna fishery, and it is in danger of being over fished to the point of collapse.

Take heart, there are measures being taken to conserve and manage this delicate ecosystem.

Coming into effect in 2009, is a plan to reduce fishing mortality by 30% (over 3 years) on Bigeye Tuna, and to reduce the risk of overfishing yellowfin tuna, by restricting the use of purse seine fishing and the use of FADs in these sensitive areas.

This year there will be fewer days to fish the high seas, in an attempt to reduce the number of tuna caught. Sensitive areas will be closed to purse seine fishing for up to three months, and the use of FADs will be prohibited from July to September.

The use of FADs results in the mortality (in great numbers) of juvenile tuna, sea turtles, sharks, and dolphins, to name a few. It is the technique of using a float to attract sea life, creating an opportunity to net them in large numbers. The unwanted species are then discarded.

You can help the Yellowfin and Bigeye Tuna, by reading the labels on the fish you buy. To ensure that it is caught in good conscience, look to see that it was pole or troll caught.
